Rooted pt.2 - Colossians

Around the table:

  • Have you ever watched a child or a pet discover their shadow or reflection for the first time? How did they react?

Read the summary for the Sunday sermon:

The world is filled with religions and the temptation to add religious activity to the gospel is constant and appealing. In this passage, Paul warns them not to let anyone add to the gospel or delude them into thinking that anything other than Christ’s work can bring change. It is in the good news of Jesus that we must root our faith.

Read: Colossians 2:16-23

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why shouldn’t we let anyone pass judgement on us regarding those things listed in verse 16? You’ll need to look back at last week’s passage for the answer.

  2. Are the old laws about food and Sabbath bad? Why or why not? (verse 17)

  3. Does keeping the old Mosaic laws regarding food and special days bring you closer to God? Why or why not? (verse 17)

  4. What does it mean to hold fast to the head? How would you explain this to a new believer? (verse 19)

  5. Read John 15:1-11. Are there any other details in this passage that stand out to you regarding holding fast or abiding?

  6. Why do you think verse 19 speaks of “the whole body” growing as opposed to merely addressing the individual?

  7. While our growth is from God, how can we actively contribute to and participate in the spiritual growth of our local body of believers at Citizens?

Prayer: Choose three people to pray.

    • Thank God for the freedom Christ has given us.

    • Thank God that we can be a part of a local body of believers.

    • Ask God to help us be a part of helping our church grow spiritually.
