Marriage Matters

Around the table:
- Have you ever had a surgery or other medical procedure? What did you notice about your medical team and how they interacted with one another in order to help you?
Read the summary for the Sunday sermon:
Understanding God’s vision for marriage is important for everyone. When we allow the world or our own imaginations to shape that vision we miss the mark and miss the opportunity to live out the truth of the gospel. With the good news of Jesus as our foundation, Paul calls Christians to radical obedience in marriage.
Read: Colossians 3:18,19
Discussion Questions:
- Besides marriage, what other relationships or roles can you think of that involve submission? These could be ones referenced in the Bible or that are a part of our culture and society.
- Does the biblical directive for each wife to submit to their husband nullify the equality of men and women that Paul wrote about in Galatians 3:28? Explain why or why not.
- How does the phrase “as is fitting in the Lord” help us understand the motivation behind a woman’s submission to her husband?
- What should characterize a husband’s love for his wife? Consider that the word for love in verse 19 is the same word that is used in Matthew 19:19, 1 Peter 1:22, and elsewhere.
- Considering all we’ve read so far in Colossians, how does a believing husband’s position in Christ enable him to practically react and respond in love in a difficult situation?
- How do the husband and wife’s roles not only complement each other but also help them serve the Lord well together?
- How can understanding the marriage relationship described here help us better understand our relationship with God?
Prayer: Thank God for each of the marriage relationships of those in your Missional Family, and ask God that each couple would be growing in how they honour and serve the Lord together.
