Prepared For Every Good Work

Colossians 1:1-14

Around the table:

  • What’s your most faithful tool or household object? Why?

  • Do you have a faithful friend? What is it that makes them faithful?

Read the summary from the Sunday sermon:

The book of Colossians is a letter from the Apostle Paul written to a young church in the small city of Colosse, addressing foundational truths of the Christian faith. Paul challenges them to examine the strength of their spiritual foundations and calls them to anchor their lives in the preeminence of Jesus Christ. The church was planted by Epaphras, who encountered Paul in Ephesus and returned home with the gospel. Paul writes from prison, concerned about false teachings infiltrating the church. He affirms the Colossians’ faith, love, and hope, praying that they grow in spiritual wisdom, live fruitful lives empowered by God, and remain thankful. Central to Paul’s message is that believers have been rescued from darkness, redeemed by Jesus' sacrifice, and now belong to God’s family. This redemption gives purpose and power to live in alignment with God's will through faithful, everyday obedience rooted in the gospel.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why is it significant that Paul addresses both the saints and the faithful brothers?

  2. What are the characteristics of a faithful Christian’s life?

  3. What practical steps can you take to grow in one of those characteristics?

  4. Why is it important to know God and His will? (verses 9-11)

  5. A quote from Spurgeon states that “Spiritual ignorance is the constant source of error, instability and sorrow.” Thinking back on the past month, share an example of how your spiritual wisdom, or lack of, affected your response in a specific situation. What scriptural truths or characteristics of God helped you, or would have helped you, navigate that situation?

  6. In this passage, what are some of the things mentioned that God has given us or done for us?

  7. Share how one or more of those affects your life today. example: I’m forgiven, so I don’t need to punish myself when I make a mistake.

  8. Share an example from the past week when you experienced or were reminded of the hope, patience with joy, or forgiveness you have in Christ.

Prayer: Thank God together for all Christ has done for you and for opportunities to learn how to enjoy the freedom of how those truths can affect our daily lives. Examples:

    • Thank you for giving me hope when I’m discouraged.

    • Thank you for giving me strength when life is hard.
