Jesus Is Greater

Colossians 1:15-23

Around the table:

  • Who has ever learned how to play an instrument, participated in a sport, or learned another language? How long did you keep at it? What was the most difficult thing about continuing on and not quitting?

Read the summary from the Sunday sermon:

This passage highlights the supremacy of Jesus overall things.  Paul teaches us that Jesus is greater than creation, the church, and our sin. Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God, the Creator and purpose of all things, and He is the one who holds everything together. He is the head of the church, guiding and sustaining it, even when human leadership fails. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus reconciles humanity to God, offering peace, holiness, and security to those who believe. The call is to make Jesus central in every part of life, because knowing Him is the greatest good.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What do these verses tell us about who Jesus is and what he’s done? (verses 15-20).

  2. How does the supremacy of Christ give you hope, purpose, and a sense of security? Can you think of a practical example from the past month when you experienced this reality?

  3. How does the fact that all things—including you— were created for Jesus help you understand how God values you as part of the body of Christ? (verses 15-18)

  4. In turn, how does the fact that all things—including you— were created for Jesus affect the way you order your life? (verses 15-18)

  5. Using your own words, how would you explain to a child that Christ “is the image of the invisible God”? (You might not come up with an amazing explanation, but hopefully this will help each of us come to a better understanding.)

  6. What does this passage tell us about our position in Christ and what he has done for us? (verses 21-22)

  7. How does that affect your life today?

  8. What do you find the most difficult part of continuing in the faith and not moving away from the hope of the gospel?

Prayer: Pray for the person to your left. Pray they will experience and be encouraged by one of the characteristics of who Jesus is and that they will continue in the faith and the hope of the gospel. Don’t worry if these prayers are short and to the point.
