A Call To Counter Cultural Living - Revelation

Read the summary of the Sunday sermon: As God’s judgment unfolds through the seals, trumpets, and bowls, John is given a vision of Babylon’s rebellion and ultimate downfall. In the midst of it, God’s people are called to live with wisdom and endurance, bearing witness to the hope of the eternal city still to come.

Read: Revelation 18:1-8

Discussion Questions:

  1. What does Babylon represent in this passage? What are some ways that our culture mirrors Babylon?

  2. In what ways have you experienced the temptation toward compromise in our current culture?

  3. Do you see yourself as part of a war against the forces of darkness? Why do you think it is easy for us to forget this reality?

  4. How can we as Christians “come out” of Babylon (Rev. 18:4) while also reaching it with the good news of Jesus?

  5. What would it look like for you to speak the gospel into our culture while resisting self-righteousness?

  6. In Rev. 17, the kings of the earth are shown to be at war with Jesus, but Jesus is shown to be victorious. How does the victory of Jesus give us hope in our mission in this world?

  7. What are some practices you can adopt to remind yourself of this hope when the world tempts us to despair?

Prayer: In line with question #3, ask God to give you the wisdom to discern how best to reach the people in your life with the gospel while resisting the temptation to compromise. Also take some time pray this for the church around the world.
