Joseph: Slave and Prisoner - Genesis

Read the summary of the Sunday sermon: Joseph is hated by his brothers and sold to traders. In Egypt, he is purchased as a household slave by Potiphar, a senior army officer. Despite his difficult circumstances, Jospeh thrives and succeeds, becoming the manager of all of Potiphar’s estate. The story then takes a dark turn when Potiphar’s wife lays lustful eyes on Joseph. Even though he flees her advance, he is falsely accused of attempted rape and imprisoned. But even in prison, eh rises above the circumstances, Throughout all these happenings, we see discover that “the Lord was with Jospeh,” fulfilling his covenant promises.

  1. How does Joseph display his faithfulness to God in this passage?

  2. Do you think there is a connection between obedience to God and receiving blessing/a reward in this passage? Why or why not?

  3. Why does Joseph not give into the temptation to sleep with Potiphar’s wife?

  4. At the end of the chapter, Joseph is in jail, yet is still given God’s favour (Gen. 39:21). How does this reality shape our understanding of how God works in our suffering?

  5. What are some practical steps we can take to help us resist temptation toward sin?

  6. The phrase “the Lord was with Joseph” appears multiple times in this chapter. How does God’s presence with us motivate our trust and obedience to God?

  7. What are some ways that we can grow in our awareness of God’s presence in our day to day lives?

  8. How does this passage point us to the person and work of Jesus?
